Choose warm color temperatures: 2700K for social areas, 3000K maximum for security. Avoid cool white above 4000K; it glares more and attracts insects.

Install motion sensors only where they serve genuine security needs, not along every path. Adjust sensitivity and duration to avoid triggering on small animals. For decorative lighting, run it on a timer: 4-5 hours after sunset suffices for most evenings.

Maintain What You Install

Garden lighting deteriorates predictably. Clean glass and solar panels quarterly; a 30% reduction in output is common from dirt alone. Check and clear drains before winter. Test ground fault protection annually. Replace solar light batteries every 2-3 years when runtime noticeably drops, not when they stop working entirely.

Keep a simple log: installation dates, product models, observed issues. This transforms frustrating troubleshooting into quick fixes and informs better purchases when replacements become necessary.
